Google does not currently offer a standalone VPN service, but it does provide VPN-like features through two main products:
- Previously available to Google One subscribers (2TB+ plans), but Google announced its discontinuation in April 2024. Existing users can continue until mid-2025.
- Purpose: Encrypted internet traffic for privacy (not for bypassing geo-restrictions).
- Regions: Limited to select countries (e.g., U.S., Canada, U.K., Mexico).
Google Fi VPN
- Available to Google Fi mobile subscribers (included at no extra cost).
- Features: Encrypts data on cellular/Wi-Fi networks, but no server selection (automatic routing).
- Limitations: Only for Fi users, not a traditional VPN for global servers.
Alternatives:
If you're looking for a VPN for privacy, streaming, or security, consider:
- Paid options: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN.
- Free options: ProtonVPN (free tier), Windscribe (limited data).
Why Google’s VPNs Were Limited:
- Focused on privacy, not unblocking content.
- Restricted availability (Fi/One users only).
If you need a VPN for general use, third-party services may be more flexible. Let me know if you'd like recommendations!
